Rose can’t remember how it happened but, somehow, she has killed her baby brother and only her elder brother, Max, can protect her. And he does.

Twenty years on and the media have fallen in love with Max and he, in turn, has fallen in love with Caroline. When Caroline is killed, suspicion inevitably falls on Rose and she once again looks to Max once more, to protect her.

Rose needs him more than ever now because, at fourteen, Rose finally came to realise what she was – a child who had killed a child – and had stopped speaking. The question is, will Max be strong enough to protect Rose a second time?

Not a Crime novel in its purest sense, though there is a crime involved, and not a Thriller, though My Perfect Silence is a thrilling and often disturbing read. Instead, Penelope Evans seems to have created a whole new sub-genre that is both beautifully drawn, yet intensely dark.

As the secrets come out, so too does the uneasiness of sibling relationships that are so often based on half-truths and misinterpretation. Evans captures this sense of “false security” with such superb accuracy, it is possible to see all family life through her character’s eyes and so makes the reader feel fortunate that their own is different.

With a cast so real and a sense of place and time so well placed in today’s modern world of mono-syllabic trust, My Perfect Silence is a novel set to change the opinions of many readers who believe a book should merely be read and not really thought about too long after it is finished.
