about Nearly Women compelled her to write In Search Of Adam,
her debut novel. Without hat chance remark, she may not have written the
book and, in all likelihood, would not have been “Scouted”

to have remained in the dusty confines of Caroline’s bottom drawer
it would have been a crying shame.
Motherless, rootless and unprotected, Jude Williams' childhood is fractured
by the horror and experience of sexual abuse, forcing her to exist somewhere
and nowhere in-between childhood and adulthood. Caught within the limitations
of her own language and trapped within a family secret, Jude becomes
the consequence of her mother's tragedy. As she moves through the 1980s,
Jude's life is buffeted by choice and destiny and she collects experiences
that layer her personal tragedy and plunge her into the darkest of worlds.
Powerful, is a single word summation of this novel. Beautifully crafted and delicately poised with distinctive nuances that make it stand out from the crowd, Caroline Smailes has produced a book to treasure for those who thought David Pelzer’s A Child Called It unputdownable.
It is not just the distinctive voice
or film-like quality of the chilling descriptions that make the novel
work on so many levels, but rather that this is a story that is so very
clearly told from the heart with such indescribable confidence one that
makes it something to be read by anyone with an interest in good writing.
