Natasha Cooper, without doubt, has style that quite clearly
flows over into her writing. Gagged & Bound,
is testament to this in its ability to be both sophisticated and enthralling
at the same time. Not all stories need blood, gore and furious pacing
to get their points across. Just an author with an innate ability to tell
a tale.
Distinguished biographer Beatrice Bowman is being sued for libel by
a new member of the House of Lords for implicating him in a thirty-year-old
terrorist outrage. At the other end of the legal spectrum, a family
of South London villains gags and suffocates those who try to expose
their secrets. Inspector Caro Lyalt has to decide what to do with information
from a whistle-blower that could ruin a colleague's career - or her
own. Caught in the middle of it all is barrister Trish Maguire.
This is crime fiction
personified. A well paced, balanced and compelling tale of mystery and
intrigue that leaves no stone unturned in its quest to beguile the reader,
yet ties everything up neatly as though it were a gift.
The dialogue is credible and well placed,
if a little too plumy in places – how many times can a father
call his daughter “sweetheart” during one meeting? –
whereas the plot and description give a superb sense of place and requisite
tension.
Overall, Gagged & Bound is an excellent read which further cement’s Natasha Cooper’s place in the legion of crime authors at somewhere very near the summit.
