Quite possibly the most engaging book of its type to have ever been written, Mark Haddon leans on personal experiences in bringing up a son with Asperger's Syndrome to bring awareness of one of the most daunting of disabilities for anybody and their family to have to deal with. Christopher is 15 and lives in Swindon with his father. He has Asperger's Syndrome, a form of autism, is obsessed with maths, science and Sherlock Holmes. . His father has also told Christopher that his mother has died and the boy finds it hard to understand other people and tries desperately to avoid conversations because, other than for his family, nobody understands his routines. |

When he discovers a dead dog on a neighbour's
lawn, he decides to solve the mystery and write a detective thriller
about it. As in all good detective stories, however, the deeper he digs,
the more information he unearths and not all of it is welcome - for
either Christopher or his family. This book is not an exploration of Asperger's.
Rather, it is a picture-book insight into how those who suffer with
the disorder view the world. Witty, painful and beautifully written,
this is a book that describes the world in all of its black & white
gaudiness as Christopher sees it; there are no lies in Christopher's
world, after all and his reactions to everyday events cause counter-reactions
that are at once honest and disturbing in their reality. This is an excellent book that should
be read not merely as entertainment, but also as a learning curve in
all of our lives. Order this book online - Linghams
