In the first of three novels to feature DCI Simon Serrailler, Susan Hill
proves that she is more than capable of switching between genres with
aplomb. The descriptions, as one might expect from the author of classics
such as The Woman In Black, are almost filmic whilst the dialogue
is snappy enough to carry the plot along at a whirlwind pace.
In The Various Haunts Of Men,
Susan Hill has created a totally believable contemporary provincial world,
whilst her portrayal of the everyday only enhances the incredible tension
that is held within the story.
