Val McDermid biography by Chris High

As gripping and well written as anything Val McDermid has ever written, this fourth outing for Tony Hill and Carol Jordan is quite possibly the author’s finest work to date.

The Torment Of Others
by Val McDermid

A dead woman discovered in a sexual position on a bloody mattress, appears to be the victim of a killer the team knows all about: the monstrous Derek Tyler, who had carried out similarly bloody work two years before. However, forensics have landed Tyler in a mental institution. Does this mean that Hill and Jordan are searching for a murderer who is copying the techniques of the psychotic killer already in captivity?

This is a book filled with so many twists and turns it resembles the Alton Towers Corkscrew ride. The characters, especially Hill and Jordan, are so believable they beg the reader to enter their world as though they are extending tea invitations, while the scenario is so intricately detailed and yet so well defined it becomes a prose based play which can almost be followed with ones eyes firmly closed.

This is an exceptional read that ranks with anything else on the market that has been written by British crime authors and only further enhances Val McDermid’s title of being the Queen of British Crime fiction.
