Born in Fife in 1960, Ian Rankin has experienced many different employment roles - grape-picker, swineherd, hi-fi journalist and alcohol taster, to name but a few. However with the release of his first Rebus novel in 1987, Noughts and Crosses, Rankin's true vocation came to light. Subsequently, Ian Rankin has won award after award, including the coveted Crime Writer's Association Gold Dagger for Black And Blue in 1999

Three of the Rebus novels have been televised, starring John Hannah as the irascible detective, and Rankin fronted his own much-acclaimed documentary series for Channel 4 Television surrounding the subject of Evil in 2002.

Ian Rankin has also written three titles under the pseudonym of Jack Harvey, has won much praise for his short stories and was awarded the OBE in 2002 in recognition of being one of the UK's best selling authors.

He lives in Edinburgh with his wife and two sons.
