It's eight o'clock as, bleary-eyed, they trickle in
Grumpy, resentful of the early start
Their minds already on the day ahead.
Here he comes, The Joker, brace yourself.
Up goes the predictable, defiant little sign:
"Where's my coffee?"
Forcing a smile and good humor I say
"Your English is getting better!"
But deep down I think: What am I doing here?
No time for regrets or wishful thinking
It's time to shake them up, wake them up
Make them curious, develop their minds.
"Where's my coffee?"
I ask myself, longing for the caffeine jolt to hit.
Get them brainstorming in the meantime:
"Suggest three ways to improve our lessons"
That should get them going!
"You could get a coffee machine installed; (good idea!)
And perhaps arrange an 8.30 start; (that would be nice!)
And maybe you could cancel our test next week." (dream on!)
Thank you gentlemen, my work has not been in vain:
You have mastered the art of making suggestions.
The ice is broken, the barricade has fallen
Time now flies as they happily soak up the second conditional
Even The Joker smiles as he thinks of what flower he would be.
Suddenly it's 9.30.
Time to end, and I now know what I am doing here.
