Chris De Burgh is the perennial entertainer so often at his best when on stage. Having released a DVD of his latest Road To Freedom tour in 2004, it might be considered a little odd that this twin disc offering is not simply a soundtrack of the same show. Thankfully, this is not the case. The DVD presentation gives a false representation of what De Burgh is all about on stage; drive, energy and enthusiasm, which are all sadly lacking in the film, from both audience and performer alike. This CD goes someway to correcting that misrepresentation and very definitely sets the record straight.

Recorded at the Westfalenhalle in Dortmund on November 6th 2004, the gig marked the twentieth anniversary of De Burgh's first appearance at what has grown to be his favourite German venue. 7,000 people turned out to celebrate with the singer and added an impact to the CD that almost goes beyond adoration.

From the haunting When Winter Comes to the emotional Snows Of New York, Chris De Burgh is in fine fettle as he delivers song after song faultlessly and professionally. In the absence of a band - Chris De Burgh bravely set out on the tour, solo - the finest example of this is in his superb baladic version Say Goodbye To It All, which here has been made all the more moving for the change in tempo. Whereas Here For You, the strongest song on the Road To Freedom album by far, is equally as impressive when performed on the piano alone. Last Night is also performed with aplomb worthy of mention.
Without the thump and grind of a drummer, or the omniscient tempo of a bassist, some songs do suffer it has to be said. The Revolution and High On Emotion are built to rock places in a manner that a voice and a lone guitar just can't manage. For the most part however, the set-list is a winner on all fronts and especially the medley at the end of Disc 1, which includes A Night On The River, Crying And Laughing and Save Me. Whereas Up Here In Heaven and Carry Me (Like A Fire In Your Heart) would need to be played on an out of tune, rusty old bedstead not to sound superb.

Here, they are tailor made for the occasion. Intimacy is the crux of this presentation and De Burgh can be seen to have mastered the art of giving the audience exactly what they want, night after night. This is particularly apparent on Saint Peter's Gate, as the audience continue to sing its chorus long after the track has finished, encouraged to do so by the star himself. After performing so many shows, Chris De Burgh must feel glad at heart to know that so many people still want to come and see him perform the world over. And when he's compiling shows like this, it isn't difficult to understand why.
