Feature on Ian Moor

IAN MOOR

Ian Moor, the likeable lad from Willerby near Hull was catapulted from paint blender to UK national fame when he won the 'Stars in their Eyes' final singing the highly popular Chris de Burgh song 'The Lady in Red'.

In the UK, since 1990, Granada Television's 'Stars In Their Eyes' series has been a staple of ITV's Saturday night prime time TV schedules. Attracting viewing figures of around 10 million for each show, each series attracts tens of thousands of applications from potential participants hoping to appear on the show as a tribute to their favourite musical stars - the 1999 series, for example, had 50,000 applicants for 60 places.

Asked how he ended up applying for 'Stars In Their Eyes', Ian said on the TV program ' Magic Moments': "It was down to a friend of mine - Pat Phillips, she saw me perform the song at a charity show. She came up to me afterwards and said 'You sound just like him - you should go in for it.' So I kind of knew I did sound a bit like him, the tone of my voice was similar, but it wasn't until I'd been given that push that I sent off the form.

Ian didn't make it onto the TV program initially and was placed on standby for the 1998 series. After eventually getting the call from Granada, Ian polled 501,868 votes from the UK public to win the prestigious television show.

Later that same year, Ian then added the unique "Champion of Champions" title as he was pitted against winners of the previous 10 years, this time he got half of all the votes that came in for the entire show.

Chris de Burgh recalled the events in the Getaway Gazette Feb 2000: "I rang him from a restaurant I was in when I heard that he'd won, and invited him down to spend the day with me in a recording studio, later that week. He came along and even got to sing on one of the tracks. He had a lovely time. He was a very nice lad. We took him out to dinner, filled him up with beer and sent him off to Belfast the following day to do The Gerry Kelly Show."

As the new series of 'Stars In Their Eyes' for 2000 begun, Ian was invited back on the show, again to perform 'The Lady In Red'. This time there was to be one more special surprise in store for him. During his performance, Chris de Burgh himself appeared mid-way through and continued to duet the 1986 number one hit in harmony with Ian.

Ian Moor's Live video entitled 'Naturally
For a while Ian found himself on the Roller Coaster of fame with a succession of high profile TV interviews. Ian said at the time that he found the attention 'flattering' and that, "he never refused an autograph".

This lead to him releasing a CD and 'live performance' video entitled 'Naturally' which took Ian into the charts. With a National tour of Theatres things were looking good.

As the theatre dates became less frequent, Ian decided to take his career back into his own hands and is now taking work that allows him to spend a little more time with his family in Hull.
